The Silver Mine Museum

000_0023

Created in the out-buildings of the lower courtyard by the Association "La Route des mines Domes et Combrailles", the museum gives you an insight into the life of the local people and miners who extracted galena along the banks of the river Sioule, from the third to the twentieth century.

The museum describes the history of mining techniques from the extraction of galena ore to the smelting of silver ingots, especially in the nineteenth century.  From 1853 to 1897, 68 kilometres of galleries and 2900 pits were dug while the smelting factory produced 50,000 tons of lead and 100 tons of silver.

You can discover the secrets of industrial life in Pontgibaud from information panels, working models, tools, a model gallery, mineral specimens, hydro-electric power,  documents, photographs and video clips.

The museum opening times are the same as those of the Chateau.
